“AL MAL TIEMPO, BUENA CARA”
“Al mal tiempo, buena cara” is a saying that means that, when things go wrong or get complicated, it’s better to deal with those issues with a good attitude.
Literally, it means that, when the weather is bad, having “a good face” is better (i.e. having a smile on your face or a happy face) in order to avoid the weather ruining our day. Therefore, this idiom is, first and foremost, a call for optimism and hope since problems are handled easier when you have a good attitude.
In English, this expression could be translated as:
- Look on the bright side
- What can’t be cured must be endured (which literally means “lo que no puede curarse debe soportarse”)
- To put a brave face on it
- When life gives you lemons, make lemonade
