PRETENDER vs PRETEND
The Spanish verb pretender in Spanish can be mixed up with the verb pretend in English.
Pretender can be translated as expect, intend to, or hope to achieve:

- Pretendo terminar mi carrera este año [I expect/hope to finish my Bachelor’s degree this year]
- Pienso viajar a Estados Unidos cuando ahorre dinero [I intend to/expect to travel to the US when I save some money]
On the other side, pretend in English would be translated into Spanish as fingir, simular (feign, fake, act as if), or hacer como si:

- Manuel pretended to eat José’s cake [Manuel simuló comerse la tarta de José / Manuel hizo como si se hubiera comido la tarta de José]
- Marina pretended to be a princess when she was a kid [Marina jugaba a ser una princesa cuando era niña]
- I pretended not to know her [Hice como si no la conociera / Fingí no conocerla]
